2025 Mohawk Valley Jewish Hall of Fame
Martin Abelove 1907-1995
Martin Abelove’s contributions to Jewish life in the US, Israel, and the Mohawk Valley were motivated by an overriding belief in Judaism and Israel. During the 1940’s he, along with others, quietly fundraised throughout the US and smuggled that money into what is now Israel. He was one of a group of 44 leaders to be invited by Prime Minister David Ben Gurion to discuss economic issues and strategies.
Israel was always a primary interest for Martin. He helped to create, fund, and work a Biblical Garden outside of Jerusalem. Naot Kedumin has been visited by many Uticans and was the Bar Mitzvah site for one local family. At age 66, Martin flew to Israel to drive an ambulance during the '73 war.
At home, Abelove Linen Supply was a growing company with branches throughout New York and New England. Martin was its president and guiding force until his death. It was a principal employer in Oneida County and was frequently involved in community projects.
In 1949, Martin served as President of the Utica Community Council (the forerunner of our Federation). Among other local Jewish activities, he helped to organize the centennial anniversary of House of Jacob, now Zvi Jacob. He was an active worker and contributor to Israel Bonds, United Jewish Appeal, Temple Beth El, House of Jacob, and the Jewish Community Center. Frequently, he invited the community to parlor meetings to discuss local and Israeli issues.
For decades, Marty Abelove served as an active, guiding member of our community. We continue to reap the positive impact he had on Jewish lives in the Mohawk Valley.
